Vita

I am pursuing my PhD in Dr Ho’s lab in the Mechanical Engineering department at UCLA. Before starting my graduate work here I did my undergraduate education in University of Tehran, Iran and earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. I got involved in research in Comutational fluid mechanics and worked on Elliptic grid generation with multigrid method.

Current Research

Developing biosensors for faster and easier diagnostics has become a very interesting topic of research especially with the development of MEMS and nanotechnology. High levels of sensitivity and specificity is required for this type of sensors. In my research I have been working on the detection part of the biosensors, developing and implementing different highly sensitive methods of detection.

Currently I am developing an assay, with which I would be able to detect Domoic Acid on gold electrodes using an electrochemical sensor. Domoic Acid is a toxic molecule produced by Pseudo nitzschia diatom and the reason for toxin production is not known. Since DA is a very small molecule, I am using a competitive assay to detect this molecule.

Previously I have developed an optical setup with which detection of biomolecules with sensitivity down to single molecule is possible. The method used is Laser Induced Fluorescent. This sensor can be widely used with different types of both molecules and biomolecules. I have also worked with protein IL-8, a biomarker for oral cancer, and detected it down to 4.0 fM using a confocal microscope.
