I was born in Dalian, China. I went to Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, where I earned my B.S. degree in Automation Control. During my undergraduate studies, I found my research interest in studying complex systems. Complex systems such like biological systems, financial systems and human society are amazingly highly self-organized. Understanding and trying to control such systems is a tough but extremely exciting challenge to human beings. Fascinated by this enthusiasm, I joined Professor Chih-Ming Ho’s lab at UCLA in the summer of 2007 to continue my study as a Ph.D student in Mechanical Engineering. Under the supervision of Dr.Ho, I developed a rapid drug searching platform for combinatorial drug identification. This platform fuses engineering searching algorithms and biological experiments. With this platform, we identified the optimal drug cocktails for inhibiting Herpes Simplex Virus infection by testing less than 0.2% of the total possible drug combinations. I have also worked on synthesizing AgI nanoparticles using micro fluidics. Solid AgI nanoparticles are important electrolytes for next generation battery. Properly designing micro fluidics channels, we could synthesize uniform AgI particles at less than10 nm.
My research interests have been focused on understanding and controlling complex systems, particularly biological systems and chemical systems. Complex systems such like cells involve multiple layers of intracellular signaling molecules. These molecules interact in a highly dynamic nonlinear way. Traditional drug development usually targets on a particular molecule, such as a piece of DNA or RNA, a protein, an individual signaling receptor at cell membrane, etc. Due to the intrinsic cellular complexity, this route has resulted in a low yield of successful new drug cases of less than 1%. Meanwhile, to decide the target, traditional biologists commonly spend years of bench work. In our lab, we developed an effective and rapid solution to identify optimal drug combinations. This new platform combines an engineering searching algorithm and bench experiments. We applied this platform technique to various cases, including Herpes Simplex Virus inhibition, oral cancer therapy, osteogenic medium development and currently Chinese herbal medicine studies. Generally, we were able to identify effective drug cocktails by testing less than 0.2% of the total possible drug combinations. We also applied this platform technique to the synthesis of AgI nanoparticles in microfluidics. AgI nanoparticles are important electrolytes for next generation battery. By combining our search platform and microfliudics channels, we successfully synthesized uniform AgI nanoparticles at less than 10nm.
